Busty Rhymes with MC Hot Pink Empty She's a game performer

Post  dbigsby Tue Aug 26, 2008 4:32 pm

Penny Ashton give a full-throated monologue -- interspersed with verse, song, and rap -- primarily about single life. She's a game performer, working a crowd that was willing to be worked, but with mixed results as her material ranges from strong to so-so.

She's got a wonderfully raunchy vocabulary and uses it to good effect. But a handful of her punch lines were propped up by a well-placed profanity to provide the jolt that the joke lacked.

Ashton's poems are often fun (if sometimes a bit fast to follow), and she reveals a lovely singing voice in a country-styled song about shooting bad boyfriends (animated by her expressive acting). Her closing number, a rap about rappers, was weak by any measure, and likely didn't resonate with the crowd, which was dominated by seniors.

In short: this is a fun show, but not laugh-out-loud fun, more laughing-on-the-inside fun.

What a difference an audience can make. This one was wowed by the zingers and even the rap number at the end resonated with the audience, equally composed of under 30s and over 50s.

Make no mistake, this is a show with vulgarity - but Penny has a quick wit and knows how to work the crowd.

Hot Pink had me (and my sister, and her boyfriend) laughing to near tears repeatedly. Her transitions between prose, poetry, rap and singing were seamless and gave the show a really spontaneous but polished feel. There's some vulgar content for sure, but she was on target - making fun of drunk hecklers, street harassers, and hypocritical beauty standards, without waxing theoretical, resorting to played-out sexist stereotypes or alienating the audience. The intentional excess of inventive cursing was the cherry on top for me - I didn't find it repetitive or gratuitous at all, but a colourful complement to cheeky and passionate content.

Highly recommended!
